The concert will be conducted by Mo. Damien Sneed who premiered the Mass in New York City in 2008, and by co-conductor Detroit Jazz Master and former Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra member Professor Rodney Whitaker, currently Director of Jazz Studies at Michigan State University and conductor of The Gathering Orchestra. This exceptional jazz ensemble conceived by the late Geri Allen will provide the instrumental sonorities and rhythms that define the art form. The composition is an admixture of classical and gospel/jazz styles. If you are unfamiliar with the work, herewith for your perusal is a link to a live performance in which you will note the presence of over 20 brief solo opportunities for ensemble singers capable of doing stylistic justice to the music.
The plan at present is for a two-day workshop at which Mo. Sneed will discuss the music and demonstrate a rehearsal process that he knows from experience to produce positive outcomes. The first workshop on December 27 from 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM the singers will join the session. The second workshop on December 28th will run from 11:30 AM until 3:30 PM with a break for lunch and fellowship. A third workshop is tentatively scheduled for April 27th 11:00 AM- 4:00 PM. Final rehearsals involving all participants including the orchestra are scheduled for the week of May 13 culminating in the performance planned for May 18.
